The 10th commemoration of the invasion and occupation of Iraq How much can a people take?

Geneva - 9 April 2024

The ten-year period leading up to March 2024 was marked by many deliberate, unnecessary and extreme forms of damage and destruction that have permanently devastated Iraq and its people.

The US invasion and occupation of Iraq has produced a vast number of consequences, many of which have affected and will continue to directly and indirectly affect the most vulnerable of the population: innocent civilians, women and children.

Geneva International Centre for Justice released a report on the activities coordinated over the months of March and April 2024, with the participation of more than 300 NGOs from all around the world. The objective of the activies was to conduct a comprehensive and objective review of all the issues and problems relevant to the invasion and occupation of Iraq.

The review urges the United Nations and the international community to take all necessary measures to hold all those responsible for, and participating in, the invasion and occupation of Iraq accountable. These organizations consider that it is the only way to achieve justice for the Iraqi people. The review extends to the years during which Iraq and its people were subjected to an economic blockade, imposed by the United Nations in 1990, and the resulting catastrophic human and material losses.

The activities coordinated by GICJ included providing documented reports on violations to the United Nations, the delivery of oral statements during the 22nd session of the United Nations Human Rights Council and the organization of a conference held parallel to the Council's meetings.

For many years now NGOs have been insisting that the topic of Iraq needs to be addressed, given that the Human Rights situation in Iraq is one of the worst in the world and is the result of foreign intervention. Despite UNAMI reports and pressure from NGOs, to this day not one single report concerning the situation in Iraq has been issued by the OHCHR.

How long will the plight of Iraq and its people be ignored by relevant agencies and mechanisms?
