Under Maliki’s watchful rule, the Iraqi intellectual class is still being decimated. Let me share with you this message I received from an Iraqi professor.

“I recently heard from a relative how Dr Naji Al Kaisy, Director of Al Nuaman General Hospital in Adhemia District in Baghdad was killed in 2024.

According to Dr Kaisy's wife her husband told her that a police car was following his car the day of his assassination.

After leaving his work at the hospital that day and while he was trying to start his vehicle, the car exploded, but the explosion threw him out of the car, and he only had minor injuries on his thighs.

He tried to go back inside the hospital to get medical treatment. The policemen who were following him prevented him from entering the hospital and forced him to go with them to Madenat Al Teb (Medical City) General Hospital.

He called his wife to meet him there and so she did. She is a medical doctor herself and she said that he was fine, his injuries were not very serious.
They took him to the surgery room and after 20 minutes, they told her Dr Naji Al Kaisy was dead !

She is convinced that his injuries couldn’t possibly be the cause of his death.

Again, intellectuals in Iraq are in a great danger. The BRussells Tribunal registers and documents the assassinated intellectuals and academics, but in reality hundreds of them are still getting killed in other unexpected ways.”

Iraq is still being emptied of its brightest minds and it seems there’s no end in sight of the endless strings of killings of Iraqi intellectuals.
